Overview
A major barn conversion, transforming a character property that was 26 inches out of square. The renovation included replacing wall plates, spars, queen truss, and strengthening the overall structure — all while preserving the building’s heritage feel and preparing it for modern family living
Challenge
- Over half of all roof timbers required replacement
- Barn measured 26 inches out of square, posing alignment challenges
- Tasked with preserving aesthetic character alongside structural repairs
- Needed to ensure the roof was fully watertight and structurally sound for conversion to a home
Our Approach
- Replaced wall plates, spars, and queen truss to create a stable structure
- Employed @donlow_ltd Roofshield with counter batten system for superior ventilation and underlay
- Used William Blyth handmade Barco pantiles on one side to retain original roof character
- Installed bespoke ridge tiles for full weatherproofing
- All new code 5 lead flashings to abutments with copper strapping for wind uplift resistance
- Added six Keylite roof windows for modern light and comfort
Result
- The barn now boasts both heritage charm and modern building standards
- Thorough timber replacement and advanced roof systems ensure longevity
- The roof is watertight, visually compelling, and ready for residential use
